- You must submit your declaration before March 16th, 2023. You can submit it online here: https://vut-ilv.ottawa.ca/en-US/vutdeclaration/. Use the information provided on the letter or email you received from the City of Ottawa.
- If you do not submit your declaration before March 16th, 2023 the city will automatically determine your property as vacant, and will impose a 1% tax on your final tax bill this year.
- Late declarations will be accepted until April 30th, 2023 and are subject to a $250 late fee. In 2023, the late fee will be waived to provide additional time for residents to complete their declaration.
- The 1% Tax is determined by the property's assessed value as per MPAC.
- If your residential property has been declared or deemed vacant for more than 184 days in the previous calendar year and does not meet one of the exceptions outlined on the city of Ottawa site (link below), then the Vacant Unit Tax will be applied to your property.
- If you own more than one property, a declaration must be submitted for each residential property.
- All residential property owners are required to submit an annual property declaration starting January 2023, even if your property is your primary residence.
- If your property contains a "granny" or accessory suite an additional declaration is not required.
- If your property is deemed vacant, the Vacant Unit Tax amount will be added to your Final Tax Bill in June.
